NASHVILLE, TN (WRCB) -

Tennessee's nearly 60-year-old annexation laws could soon be obsolete.

This after the state house overwhelming voted Thursday to give the power back to the people.

Currently, the city can acquire new territory by ordinances, but critics say it's forced annexation.

Mayor Andy Berke's spokeswoman Lacie Stone tells Channel 3, if passed, the new bill will only affect future planned annexations.

The bill, which is headed to Governor Haslam's desk, is sponsored by Hixson Senator Bo Watson.
