UPDATE: Athens theft causes problems for home rebuild

ATHENS, TN (WRCB) -

UPDATE: Barry Casson was taken into custody just before 5 p.m. Friday afternoon.

PREVIOUS STORY: Warrants have been issued for two suspects wanted for stealing a trailer loaded with housing materials.

David Dugan and Barry Casson both have a criminal history involving thefts.

UPDATE: A happy new part of the story for a family of four, down on their luck.

The Monroe family's house burned in December and a company was rebuilding.  But a 16 foot flat bed trailer with vinyl siding that was headed for their new home build site was stolen.

After seeing the story, a man from Cleveland returned the trailer with the siding to the work site the next day.  Turns out he had bought it from a third party and planned to use the siding on a house this weekend

The man was able to tell detectives who he bought it from and they are now following up on that information.

PREVIOUS STORY: Athens police are looking for someone who stole a 16 ft. flatbed trailer with vinyl siding on it.

The theft took place over the weekend on Anton Street and it's causing some problems for a local building company.

"You can see where they pulled it out," said Denny Vance, Owner of VIP Carpentry.

This is all that's left from an act of theft, tread marks from the tires of a 16 ft. trailer that was stolen over the weekend.

"It's sad that we've already been through so much, especially my children," said Lacey Monroe, Homeowner.

Monroe's home burned just days after Christmas from an electrical fire that started at the front of the house.

Monroe hired VIP Carpentry to rebuild it, so she and her children could have a place to live.

"We were finishing the sheetrock and it takes time for the mud to dry so we were about to get started on the siding," said Vance.

Monroe tells Channel 3 last weekend she and her children stopped by the home to check in on the progress.

"Every day after school I bring the kids to come look at their new rooms and their house," said Monroe. "We didn't come in and we weren't looking for anything out of the ordinary, everything looked the same."

However, when workers returned to the home on Monday morning, they found key items needed to finish the home missing. A16ft flatbed trailer, with all of the vinyl siding was gone.

"It's really upsetting to come in on a Monday morning with plans on getting things taken care of that week to find out the trailer and the materials are gone after they've been locked up," said Jon Vance.

Jon Vance says they had been working as quickly as possible to get the family moved back in, however with the materials missing, their completion date has now been delayed from April to June and the bill to replace it won't be cheap.

Monroe tells me she just wants some peace.

"We just want a break, we just want to live our normal lives like we did before the fire," said Monroe.

Athens police are working the case, so no arrests have been made.

If you see a 16ft trailer with deck boar and chrome, you are asked to call the police department.

Vance tells Channel 3 a reward will be given to anyone who is able to give information that leads to an arrest.
