GA road repairs continue as spring arrives

ATLANTA (AP) - Although winter is officially over, ice storms this season left lots of potholes and other problems on Georgia roads that state and local officials are still dealing with.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Natalie Dale says the agency is using money from its $228 million routine maintenance fund to cover winter weather-related highway issues.

Dale says the maintenance money is separate from the department's capital construction fund, so the surprise costs aren't expected to impact major road projects.

City of Atlanta spokesman Carlos Campos says two winter storms and cleanup efforts cost Atlanta roughly $13.5 million. Campos says Atlanta is drawing from a $137 million rainy day fund to deal with storm-related issues, and is expecting to be reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for some of the costs.
