While Republicans may have attracted much of the attention, this week, a familiar Democrat has thrown her hat into the ring for the Tennessee 3rd District seat in the US House of Representatives.

Dr. Mary Headrick, the nominee for her party in 2012, has announced her candidacy in the August Primary. Making her home in Maynardville, the now-retired physician said after her loss to Representative Chuck Fleischmann she would not run again, but would help future Democratic candidates. She has clearly had a change of heart, stating in a press release, "All the people, especially the working families and retirees of District 3, deserve representation. They are not getting it."

In the August 2012 Primary, Dr. Headrick defeated businessman Bill Taylor to face incumbent Chuck Fleischmann, who was seeking his second term. In her initial release for her renewed campaign for Congress, she lays out her platform, stating, "We deserve results, like a rise in minimum wage and a halt to wasting U.S. resources in Afghanistan. We must be heard; we must restore democracy."

Republican and Democrat Primaries are set for August 7th with the General Election November 4th.
