TN Senate decries 'radical agenda' of UT's Sex Week

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, TN (AP) - The state Senate has passed a resolution directing the University of Tennessee to require parents to opt in to allowing student fees to go toward events deemed "controversial or objectionable."

The chamber voted 23-6 in favor of the measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Mike Bell of Riceville that decries what it calls the "radical agenda" of the student run Sex Week at the state's flagship public university.

Four Democrats and two Republicans voted against the measure.

Republican Sen. Stacey Campfield of Knoxville said he doesn't believe the resolution will be successful in halting Sex Week on campus, and will pursue legislation to specifically limit which outside speakers can be invited to campus.

The House has also passed a resolution condemning the student organizers of the event.
