AUSTIN, TX (NBC) -- A suspected drunk driver faces two murder charges after striking a crowd outside a club being used a venue for the South By Southwest #SXSW digital conference in Austin, Texas, police said.

A man and a woman died and 23 others were injured - five of them critically - when the car plowed through a barricade close to The Mohawk just after 12:30 a.m. local time (1.30 a.m. ET).

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said the two victims were on a mo-ped that the motorist hit along with pedestrians who were leaving a club where a concert had been held, the Associated Press reported.

The chief said the man also struck a cab before jumping out of his car and trying to run. Officers shocked him with a stun gun and took him into custody.

Lt. Brian Moon said 23 people were taken to area hospitals, five of them in critical condition.

The Mohawk was hosting a concert by musician Tyler, The Creator to coincide with the #SXSW festival.
