Fire and Police Pension plan approved

Posted: Updated:

The Chattanooga City Council unanimously approved the new "fire and police pension plan" on third and final reading Tuesday night.

Members of the mayor's task force say the old plan was only about 50 percent funded and changes had to be made.

The move sparked heated debate, early on, especially from those who are already retired who feared cuts to what they'd earned.

A few protestors showed up at the meeting. As the measure passed, they stormed out, saying, "We'll see you in court."

One point of contention is a cut in promised cost-of-living increases.
