Mayor Kicks-off Book Drive with Velveteen Rabbit

Posted: Updated:

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke hopes everyone will join him in celebrating National Reading Month by donating to a city-wide book drive.

He dropped off a few of his favorite books at the Westside Youth and Family Development Center to kick-off the campaign, Monday afternoon.

That center is one of 17 across the city, all of which are helping more than 800 students learn to love reading.

If you would like to help, new or gently used books are being accepted at several locations: City Hall, Public Library Branches, all Youth and Family Development Centers and the administrative office on 12th Street. McKay Books will match each book dropped off at their store with another one for the drive. And for each collected at Barnes & Noble, the bookstore will give a child at the YFD Centers a gift card.

The book drive runs through April 9th, then on April 12th, the books will be given to needy kids at the centers in honor of 'Drop Everything & Read Day.'
