A gas station clerk in North Georgia, found lying dead on the store floor.

The suspect  is still on the run. It happened at the Kanku's Express on Airport Road in Dalton. Police say a customer called police around midnight after seeing the body.

No names are being released at this hour.

"Friends of the family say the 36-year-old clerk was working the night shift alone at this Kanku's. It's an incident that's leaving family, co-workers and frequent customers very shaken."

"Sad, sad, sad time. Hmm, really hate it," Jeff Williams, Customer.

Jeff Williams reacts to news the third-shift clerk at this "Hi Tech Fuel" convenience store was killed late Sunday night.

Williams is a customer at the gas station along Dalton's Airport Road.

"I was here to get a drink and a snack but they said they were closed. Evidently they're in there cleaning up," said Williams.

Inside, deputies tell Channel 3 the clerk, in his thirties, was stabbed to death near the front counter.

A friend of the owners says the suspect spent about 20 minutes in the store, racking up lottery tickets and stealing cash out of one register.

Just before leaving the crime scene on foot.

"Sad thing. You can't even work a job anymore without having to worry about getting shot or losing your life. Just to make a dollar for your family," said Jeff Williams.

Investigators spent Monday morning combing the parking lot and grassy areas.

Even checking a muddy spot for footprints. Hopeful, just even the slightest clue could lead to an arrest.

If you have any information about this homicide, you're asked to call the GBI or the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office.

The Whitfield County 911 Center received a call just before midnight Monday from an individual advising they went into the Kanku's Express, located at 3385 Airport Road, and discovered the store clerk lying on the floor.

Officers arrived at the store within minutes and discovered the deceased body of the male clerk. The incident is being investigated as a robbery and homicide.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time. The Whitfield County Sheriff's Office is pending notification of the next of kin and are attempting to determine if any family members of the victim are in the United States.

Investigators are reviewing the store's video and following other investigative leads at this time.

"Sad thing," said Customer Jeff Williams. "You can't even work a job anymore without having to worry about getting shot or losing your life... Just to make a dollar for your family."
