Church gives away free dresses to local girls for prom

Posted: Updated:

Prom dresses and accessories can add up to hundreds of dollars and for some families that extra cash may not fit easily into their budget.

Dallas Bay Baptist Church in Hixson gave girls the chance to find their dream dress, without worrying about the price tag.

Racks and racks of dresses filled the church with hundreds of girls waiting to try them on.
"The first group was here at 7:15 this morning," said Christen Robertson, a volunteer.
Many are gently used, some even brand new and they're all free for any girl needing a dress for prom.
"Prom is a big deal to a lot of teenage girls and we want to make that possible for them," said Robertson. "It can be a financial hardship for families to get a prom dress for their daughters. We have some beautiful dresses and we just want to make that easier for them."
Briana Roberts searched the racks for the perfect dress.
"We found a dress pretty quickly, so that was pretty cool," said Roberts.
She tells Channel 3 going somewhere else for one would have been expensive.
"Some girls, they can't afford that," said Roberts.
Roberts believes this allows every girl to have the chance to feel beautiful on a very special night.
"It doesn't matter how short, tall, what color you are, you are beautiful and this gives every girl the opportunity to believe that and see that," said Roberts.

All of the dresses were donated by individuals and local businesses.

Every girl who took a dress home also had the option for free shoes, jewelry and alterations.

Christen Robertson tells us they plan to do this again next year, as long as the need is there.
