Georgia school district shifts teacher pay scale

Posted: Updated:

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A metro Atlanta school board has approved of changing the criteria it uses to determine teacher salaries.

Marietta City Schools spokesman Thomas Algarin told the Marietta Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/1ig81vo) that the district's more than 600 teachers will now be paid on a scale factoring their years of experience and level of educational attainment.

Schools Superintendent Emily Lembeck says that in the past, teachers moved up in the pay scale as long as they received satisfactory reviews from principals, regardless of how their students performed that year.

Lembeck says the goal of the new pay scale is to reward teachers earlier for their effectiveness in the classroom and to attract young and talented educators.

Lembeck says she hopes the new scale will translate to better student performance.
