Thousands in need get Angel Trees from Salvation Army

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

The Salvation Army is giving a Christmas to those who wouldn't otherwise have one, and they're doing it with your help.

The organization started giving Angel Tree gifts today to more than 5,400 people in its annual "Angel Tree" program.

"It's really hard to comprehend that there's this much need in our own home town," said Kimberly George.

Kimberly George of the Salvation Army there's a need in Chattanooga. Look no farther than Sharon Thompson.

"I see coats, baby dolls, blankets, games, it's a miracle, it's just a miracle," said Thompson.

Volunteers loaded up Thompson's trunk with toys for her 5 grandkids.

"They love it every year, every year," she said.

It's almost like Chattanooga's version of the North Pole: A car pulls up, a  Salvation Army volunteer delivers the presents, and the car drives off with a touch of Christmas in the trunk.

"My daughter wanted tinker bell, my son wanted wrestling stuff and action heroes," said Kenya Owens.

For the third year, Kenya Owens' young kids will have a Christmas thanks to the Salvation Army and fellow Chattanoogans who helped with the "Angel Tree."

"They'll be very excited when they open their gifts in the morning," Owens said. "I think it's great what they're doing for the kids and stuff. I just want to say thank you and I appreciate the gifts."

The Salvation Army says it will assist 5,445 people with Christmas, which is a 97% increase over five years ago.

Gifts will continue to be distributed Wednesday at the The Salvation Army Angel Tree Warehouse at 5001 Covington Street, off of Rossville Blvd.

All of Cleveland's gifts will be distributed in Cleveland Thursday at The Christmas Warehouse located at 2355 South Lee Hwy, Cleveland, TN.
