One dead after Birmingham apartment explosion

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WVTM) -- One of the victims from the apartment explosion Tuesday morning has died. The victim and her fiance were found around 8:00 this morning buried beneath the rubble. The man was pulled first from the rubble and taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital. He is in critical condition.

Residents in the Gate City Community say they have complained about the smell of gas in the area for about a week before the explosion this morning. Alagasco went door to door to check on the other units in the community for gas problems.

Birmingham Fire Chief C.W Mardis told Alabama's 13 the explosion went off around 2:45 Tuesday morning near the intersection of Joppa Court and Georgia Road. At this point they believe the explosion was due to a gas problem. The explosion set two, two story, five bedroom apartment units on fire. Mardis says there 9-10 people inside those two apartments at the time of the fire, the victims were taken to Trinity Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries early this morning. The injuries are mostly burns and scrapes.

Chief Mardis says units nearby were evacuated because of debris from the explosion. The power was temporarily turned off on nearby units, but all power has now been restored.\
