East Side, Brainerd among teacher incentive grant recipients

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Several Hamilton County TIF (Teacher Incentive Fund)  schools and teachers are receiving financial awards for their accomplishments during the 2012-13 school year.   The TIF grant is a federal grant that was awarded to Hamilton County as part of Tennessee's Race to the Top Initiative.

The main focus of the grant is to recognize, reward, and retain highly effective teachers in hard-to-staff and high needs schools who demonstrate increases in student achievement and value-added growth in literacy and mathematics.  Hamilton County currently has thirteen TIF schools which include the feeder schools of Brainerd High School and The Howard School.

East Side Elementary ranked within the top 20% of all schools in the state in value-added growth for both reading and mathematics.  Brainerd High saw their graduation rate improve by over 16% from year to year. Additionally, East Lake Academy received A's on the state report card in both literacy and math value-added growth.

In all, 112 teachers and administrators from the thirteen schools received additional compensation for their hard work.  Amounts varied based on criteria and eligibility rules. Teacher awards ranged from $75 to $5,500. A total of $262,225 in awards were earned by the 112 educators. Some teachers received both school or departmental  and/or individual awards.
