LAFAYETTE, Ga. (AP) - The cost of transit service in north Georgia's Walker County is about to double.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports ( ) the estimated 5,000 customers of the Walker County Transit Service will soon be paying $4 per trip for a ride that currently costs $2. The increase takes effect Jan. 2.

Walker County Economic Development and Resource Coordinator Larry Brooks tells the newspaper the change is the result of increased fuel and operations costs as well as the addition of riders who previously used Lookout Mountain Community Services' transit program.

Brooks says that even after raising fees, the agency will still not be meeting fuel costs. He says nearby Chattooga County has upped its rates from 75 cents to $2 per trip and Catoosa County doesn't offer transit service.
