Drug round up in Marion leads to 18 arrests

Posted: Updated:
MARION COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -

While the Marion County Sheriff's Department and South Pittsburg Police Department are looking for the remaining suspects on their list of indictments, they hope this bust serves as a warning to anyone else involved in drugs.

"Took a lot of career criminals off the street. I hope to send a lot of them off for a long while," said Sheriff Ronnie Burnett, Marion County.

24 indictments came down from the Marion County Grand Jury, leading to 18 arrests.  It's all in relation to an ongoing drug problem in Marion County involving meth, marijuana and pills.

"Nowadays there's just not one common drug. We have a big problem with the pills here in Marion County. Marijuana is still popular, meth is a big problem," said Sheriff Burnett.

Burnett tells Channel 3, those arrested weren't unfamiliar faces to either department.

"All of them have been through the system and that's frustrating for the Chief and me. We have to deal with the same people over and over and a lot of these people, they don't only just sell drugs, they commit a lot of other crimes," said Burnett.

That is why he wants to keep them behind bars longer. However, he says regardless of the jail time, the bust on Thursday will only be a temporary fix in a revolving door of drugs.

"It'll make a dent for a while, and as the Chief can tell you, we can get these people off the street and then someone is going to take their place," said Burnett.

"We aren't going to stop it, but you can slow it down and get the word out on the street. You may get away with it the first time, but we're going to be knocking on your door," said Dale Winters, Police Chief, South Pittsburg.

Sheriff Burnett says he hopes those involved with drugs take this bust as a message.

"We just want to let them know, just because today's over with, tomorrow we'll start right back again. So if you're in the drug selling business, you need to get out," said Burnett.

The Sheriff tells Channel 3 some of those arrested did have the option to bond out.

They are all expected in court after the first of the year.
