UPDATE: Lamar Alexander stunned by investigation of child porn involving Chief of Staff

Posted: Updated:

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander has released a statement on the investigation of allegations of child pornography involving Ryan Loskarn, Chief of Staff of Alexander's Washington, DC office.

Alexander's Statement: "I was just informed by the United States Senate legal counsel's office that law enforcement agents are conducting a search of the personal residence of Ryan Loskarn, the chief of staff of my Washington, D.C., office regarding allegations involving child pornography.

I am stunned, surprised and disappointed by what I have learned. Based on this information, I immediately placed Mr. Loskarn on administrative leave without pay. The office is fully cooperating with the investigation."

Alexander is a former Tennessee governor and has also served as the U.S. Secretary of Education. He was first elected to the Senate in 2002.

A chief of staff is typically the most senior staff position in a congressional office. That role carries even more import in an office like Alexander's, which carries a degree of seniority and influence with it.

U.S. Postal Inspectors conducted the raid.

"The Postal Inspectors Service was involved in a law enforcement action in Southeast DC," a spokesman for the agency told NBC News, declining further comment.
