Heating unit freezes at Murfreesboro school

Posted: Updated:

Despite a top-dollar renovation at a Murfreesboro city school, a brand new heating unit froze up, leaving several classrooms too cold for learning.

Workers spent most of the day Tuesday using a torch to thaw ice from the unit on top of Hobgood Elementary School.

City schools officials said eight classrooms in one wing of the school were affected.

This is the second day teachers and students had to temporarily endure the cold.

"We're looking at the classrooms individually. If it's too cold for the children, they are being put in another class, in the library or the gym," said Murfreesboro City Schools spokesperson Lisa Trail. "It's only one wing of the school that actually has any heat issues at all. It's 64 to 68 degrees in there. It's not freezing, but it's uncomfortable to sit there for a long time."

Officials said the unit is still under warranty. They hope to have the heater repaired by Wednesday.
