Man charged with vehicular homicide in Dalton crash

A Dalton man is facing a first degree vehicular homicide charge, DUI, reckless driving and other charges after a passenger in his car died in a crash.

It happened around 1:35 Sunday morning near the intersection of Fleming Street and Hollywood Drive in Dalton. Twenty-one-year old Jesus Contreras-Mendez lost control of the Honda Accord he was driving, hit a power pole and flipped the vehicle. Twenty-one-year-old Olympia Jimenez was ejected from the car and did not survive. Another passenger was taken to a hospital.

Contreras-Mendez was also charged with driving too fast for conditions, serious injury by vehicle, failure to maintain lane, failure to obey traffic control devices, driving without license on person, and seat belt violation.  He sustained a minor injury, was arrested and taken to the Whitfield County Jail.
