EYE ON HEALTH: Voluma, a dermal filler for sagging cheeks

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Dr. Gary Gesualdi says "Oh it's a huge game changer for the first time we have a soft smooth gel that we can actually inject in the upper facial area."

Dr. Gary Gesualdi is an injection specialist at Affordable Botox and he's talking about Voluma.  This is the first dermal filler approved in the United States specifically to  correct sagging in the cheek area,  that's just what some people like Tony DeJohn are looking for.

Tony DeJohn says "Getting a little heavy in here, I've always had a rounder face and when I was younger it was a little bit higher, you can pick it up."

Take a look at these before and after pictures.  As people age, the cheek area can lose volume, causing the cheeks to flatten out and the skin to droop and sag. Dr. Gesualdi says the actual procedure just takes a matter of minutes... and with this injection patients can instantly see it visibly lift up the cheek area .

Kelly Lynn says "It's very exciting, I'm looking forward to giving it a try and getting the lift in this area."

And while this new filler, Voluma, has doctors and patients excited, not everyone makes a good candidate.

Dr. Gary Gesualdi says " The younger people make the best candidates because they still have enough moisture or fullness in their cheeks that will hold the gel better."

And while patients can be in and out in a matter of minutes with little to no down time, there can be side effects.

Like swelling, bruising, or redness in the injection site.

But for patients like Kelly and Tony, they say that's a small price to pay, for a more youthful, energetic look that can last up to two years without going under the knife.
