Ineligible Vols DT Couch to play in all-star game

Posted: Updated:

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Ineligible Tennessee defensive tackle Maurice Couch has accepted an invitation to play in the College All-Star Bowl in February.

Bowl official Michael Foster confirmed in an email Couch committed to the Feb. 14 bowl game, which takes place at Furman University.

Couch played two games for Tennessee this season before Yahoo Sports reported in September that he received four payments totaling $1,350 from Luther Davis, who acted as a go-between for the players with agents and financial advisers. Tennessee announced last month that the NCAA had declared Couch permanently ineligible.

Couch, who is married with a daughter, said Monday on Tennessee Sports Radio he took benefits to help his family.

The 6-foot-2, 304-pound lineman had 3½ sacks and 12 tackles for loss in 26 career games with the Volunteers.
