LAS VEGAS (AP/UTC) - Angelo Warner scored 22 points as Morehead State defeated Chattanooga 88-75 at the Las Vegas Invitational on Thursday.
Billy Reader added 21 points and eight rebounds off the bench as Morehead State (6-2) shot a lights-out, 72.3 percent from the field. Kareem Storey scored 16 points and Chad Posthumus added 11 with seven rebounds as the Eagles won six games in November for the first time in 84 seasons.
"Our team battled and we wanted to make some guys beat us," said Mocs' coach Will Wade. "We couldn't force them to miss enough. Our effort was good and I am pleased with that, but we need to be ready to play tomorrow and win.
"We need to be excited and enthusiastic to play.
Z. Mason scored a game-high 23 points and Gee McGhee added 18 for Chattanooga (2-5), which has now lost four in a row. Mason scored 20 of his points in the second half.
Freshman point guard Greg Pryor was also in double figures with 10 points.
The Eagles had a 29-17 advantage on the glass, in part because of their shooting display. MSU shot 82.6 percent making 19-of-23 field goals in the second half.
"Our half court defense seemed to get driven on from any spot," Wade said. "They were quicker than us at all three guard spots. They just got ahead with steam and drove it, at will, to the rim.
The Mocs came as close as 42-37 on a 3-pointer by Eric Robertson after halftime, but Morehead State's Warner scored back-to-back baskets and then fed Drew Kelly for a 3-pointer and quickly pushed the lead to 10. Warner scored at 1:19 to put the Eagles up by 18, 88-70.
The Mocs wrap up their four-game West Coast swing against IUPUI on Friday. Tipoff is at 3:30 p.m ET.
