NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) - A pair of rare white alligators has gone on display at the Newport Aquarium in northern Kentucky where they'll be housed through February.

Snowflake and Snowball are on loan to the aquarium from Wild Adventures Aquarium, a sister aquarium of Newport in Valdosta, Ga.

Newport Aquarium Director of Husbandry Chris Pierson told The Kentucky Enquirer ( ) that Snowflake and Snowball are among only about 100 American white alligators in the world. Pierson believes all the white alligators live in captivity.

White alligators have a rare genetic mutation that prevents pigment. Snowflake and Snowball were born from white alligators discovered in Louisiana in 1992. The two were hatched in captivity.

The animals are about 6 feet long and 80 pounds.
