Little change in proposed 2014-15 Hamilton schools calendar

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Despite occasional complaints from parents about a school start date that creeps into early August, it isn't likely to change in 2014.  Hamilton County school district employees overwhelmingly like things just the way they are.

School Board members are likely to approve a plan on Thursday that would leave key start dates and vacation times the same as in recent years.

All certified and full-time classified employees were given an opportunity to vote on three calendar options for the 2014-15 school year.

A total of 2,362 votes were submitted. More than 73 percent of respondents preferred "Draft # 1" which would keep the current school calendar intact, as described below.

Draft #1 (1,738 votes – 73.58%)

  • Similar calendar to what has been in place for the past several years.
  • Teachers report on August 1; the first full day for students will be August 7.
  • Includes a full week for Fall Break.
  • Parent-Teacher Conferences to be held for 3-1/2 hours after school on a school-selected date during the following weeks:
    • September 29 – October 3, 2014
    • February 23 – 27, 2015
  • School ends on the Friday before Memorial Day.

School Board members are expected to approve the schedule on Thursday.
