Trenton missionary survives deadly typhoon in Philippines

Posted: Updated:
TRENTON, GA (WRCB) -

As the death toll continues to climb after the strongest typhoon on record hit the Philippines, a church congregation in North Georgia has been worrying about one of their own.

Minister, Don Walker, is currently serving on a mission trip in the islands.  He left last week before the storm hit, and thankfully has survived.

"It was nearly 48 hours before I heard from him and it was a text, saying he got there and he was fine," said his wife, Jamie Walker. "[The message] didn't come for forever. I was beginning to get worried."

Walker is a minister at Trenton's Church of Christ, and leads the church's Philippines mission program.  Walker's internet and cell phone service on the islands is limited. If he's lucky, he can touch base with his wife once a day.

"We were very, very concerned," said church elder, Aubrey McKenzie.

He said the congregation was praying for Walker to get help, not knowing the typhoon had missed the island he is working on.

"According to the information we received yesterday, the work there is going real well," said elder, Don Puryear. He said the church's mission goal is working to build their Filipino congregation, as well as hosting basketball clinics for local youth.

Jamie Walker said she's not worrying too much now that she knows her husband is safe.

"When you're doing stuff like [mission work], you focus in on what you've got to do when you get there and how you can help people."

Walker is scheduled to return home to Trenton next week, but his return flight could be delayed.  He plans to travel south to help the more devastated areas after his mission work is completed.
