3-year-old in Dalton nearly kidnapped by fake cop

DALTON, GA (WRCB) -

Ashley, 3, sits in her mom's lap Tuesday afternoon. Just days before police say two mean tried to kidnap her from her home.

Her mom, Andrea, says the girls father, Hilario Gonzalez, 29, showed up with a stranger dressed in all black.

"He come Sunday, he want to take the baby by force but she said I don't want to give her to you because you're drunk," explains Andrea's brother-in-law, Johnny Rodriguez.

That stranger was Alfredo Mendez-Canales, 54. Rodriguez says he told everyone in the home he was the law.

"He told me he was the police. I said if you're the police why you come this time and why you come drunk," Rodriguez explains, he was home at the time. "Doesn't matter what you say but I'm here and we're going to take the baby. That's what he said."

Rodriguez called for help.

"When we received the call we just coincidently had a deputy that was very, very close and literally was able to block the vehicle in," Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood says.

Little Ashley was in the front seat of the car. When the two suspects were questioned Gonzalez ran, until police zapped him with a stun gun in the back.

"Sometimes when alcohol is involved a little shambling gets going," Chitwood says.

The two face a list of charges including kidnapping and impersonating an officer. They're behind bars at the Whitfield County Jail. For Gonzalez it's the second time around.

"This was not the first occurrence and again we have nothing to prove he is the father so that's what constitutes the kidnapping aspect," Chitwood says. "For what his ultimate goal is, that's the million dollar question."
