New type asphalt makes wet roads safer

Posted: Updated:

If you've ever driven in heavy rain you know just how dangerous the roads can be.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation is working to make the roads safer in the rain by using a new asphalt.

It's called Open Grade Friction Course  and you can see the "before and after" in the picture.

The asphalt allows rainwater to drain through the top layer and out onto the side of the road.

This helps prevent hydroplaning and the spray from big trucks.

You'll find the new asphalt in Hamilton County on I-24 and I-75.
