CHATTANOOGA (UTC) -- Coming off a historic win at Appalachian State, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore quarterback Jacob Huesman is the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Huesman racked up 259 total yards in the Mocs 35-28 win, which was their first victory in Boone, N.C., in 30 years. He's the fourth straight UTC player to win a weekly honor from the league, following three defensive teammates in Davis Tull, Wes Dothard and Muhasabi Wakeel.
The win at App State also helped the Mocs break back into the FCS Coaches Poll for the first time since a season-opening loss to UT-Martin. Chattanooga is No. 23 in the latest rankings released Monday afternoon.
The Mocs (7-2, 5-1 in SoCon), who are enjoying their best start since 1980 thanks to their first-ever five-game SoCon winning streak, are also ranked No. 24 in the latest FCS poll from The Sports Network (TSN).
For the second week in a row, Huesman orchestrated a fourth quarter comeback for Chattanooga. He was 6-6 for 90 yards and two touchdowns in the final 15 minutes on Saturday.
Early in the final period, Huesman hit junior receiver Terrell Robinson for a 31-yard strike to tie the game at 21. He threw his second TD pass with nine minutes left, a 29-yard play to freshman Xavier Borishade, to give Chattanooga a 28-21 advantage.
For the game, Huesman finished with 132 rushing yards and a TD on 16 carries. His rushing TD was a seven-yard bruiser on a fake field goal. He is now fifth in the league in rushing (86.7) and rushing TDs (8). He was 13-19 through the air for 127 yards and the two scores.
It is the first time this season and the fifth time in his career Huesman ran and threw for over 100 yards in the same game. It is the first SoCon recognition for the Chattanooga native of the season and the second offensive honor of his career.
The win at Appalachian State puts the Mocs in first place in the SoCon race at 5-1, 7-2 overall. The Mocs host Wofford (5-3, 4-1 SoCon) in what is arguably the biggest regular season game in Finley Stadium history on Saturday.
