Holiday travel advice: book now!

Posted: Updated:

(NBC News)  If you don't carve out some time this week to do some planning for the holidays, it's going to cost you.

"This year in particular, we're seeing that airfare is up seven-and a half percent," notes Travelocity's Courtney Scott.

That means the average round-trip domestic airfare is now up to $450.

"This is probably going to be the highest priced holiday fares we've seen in the last decade," says Pauline Frommer of Frommer's Travel Guides.

That's why travel experts say book your holiday flights over the next week or so, or you'll pay even more.

"We're seeing that, after November 12th, about six weeks out from the holidays, we see a steep increase in prices," Scott says.

One reason is airlines are leaner and meaner than a few years back, with fewer flights and fewer empty seats.
