Five area teams still alive at GHSA state softball championships

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRCB) -- Five teams remain after late night of action Friday at the GHSA state softball championships.

Rain pushed back the day's morning action midway through the afternoon, forcing many winner's bracket contests to start well after 10 p.m. ET.

Northwest Whitfield and Calhoun secured spots in Saturday's championship round, where they will have to lose twice to be denied a state title. The Lady Bruins are the defending Class AAAA champs, and earned a chance to repeat by beating rival Heritage 5-4 in Friday night's winner's bracket final.

Heritage joins Ringgold and Gordon Lee in having to battle back through the loser's bracket Saturday. The Generals and Lady Trojans must win three in a row to win a state championship in AAAA, while the Lady Tigers must win four straight games Saturday to claim the AAA title.

Dade County became the first area team eliminated from the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Berrien County in the Class AA loser's bracket. The Wolverines finish the season at 25-14 overall.
