South Pittsburg takes district over rival Marion Co. 35-17

Posted: Updated:

JASPER, TN (WRCB) -- Make it eight straight for the boys from South Pittsburg over rival Marion County. It wasn't as easy as the past three, but the Pirates used a mix of big plays and one lengthy drive to win the District 6-A Title, 35-17.

South Pittsburg's Jajuan Lankford was named WRCB Player of the Game. Lankford piled up 220-yards rushing on 20 touches with two touchdowns. One from 63-yards and one from 52-yards.

The Pirates jumped out to a 14-3 lead after Lankford's first touchdown and a 49-yard returned fumble recovery from Kahlil Mitchell. Mitchell also rushed for 103-yards on 14 touches.

Blake Zeman gave the Warriors their second lead of the game in the second quarter after his second short touchdown.

Down 17-14, the Pirates forced a punt and within a minute to the half Lankford gracefully sprinted 52-yards for his second touchdown to put South Pittsburg back in front for good, 21-17.

Late in the third quarter the Pirates took advantage of a fourth-down penalty (running into the kicker.)

That 15-play, 75-yard drive ended with a touchdown pass from Kitt Grider to Corbin Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald also intercepted a fourth quarter Marion County pass in the end zone.

South Pittsburg (9-1, 5-0) will be a number one seed in the post season.

Marion County (8-2, 4-1) will learn its fate on Saturday.
