GLENDALE, AZ (KPNX) - Glendale police say a severed finger led them to the foiled thief who lost it.

"His own finger put him behind bars," a police spokeswoman said.

The suspect, Joshua Allen Goverman, 29, of Glendale, was booked on suspicion of theft on the strength of the evidence he left behind, police said.

On Oct. 7, someone tried to steal copper wiring from the back of an air-conditioning truck parked in a driveway.

"When (the victim) walked out to his work truck the morning of (Oct. 7), he got quite a surprise," Officer Tracey Breeden wrote in a news release.

"His eyes saw something he couldn't believe ... a cut-off finger that was caught up in the wiring."

The finger was retrieved as evidence and sent to the Glendale Police Forensics Unit.

A fingerprint was obtained, and a positive identification was made, Breeden said.

"The finger identified the suspect," Breeden said.

About a week later, Glendale police officers found Goverman, she said.
