Anonymous funds pay for new track at local high school

Posted: Updated:

The athletic facilities at Southeast Whitfield High School have needed a makeover for years, but the money just wasn't there. That is, until someone donated nearly a million dollars to the school for improvements.

Friday night, after several months of hard work, the first event was held at the high school with that new addition.

A brand new track now frames the football field and there's a new roof for the concessions stand.

The project started during the summer and the finishing touches have just been completed.

Athletic Director, Mark Lentych says the upgrade was definitely needed and the school community is thankful for the generous gift from the anonymous donor.

"Our county has had tough economic times and our track was in such poor condition, but there was no money for it," said Lentych. "We're happy, we're grateful for it. We feel blessed to have it and are glad to see our kids benefit from it."

This project is being done in two phases; the second phase will include a brand new tennis court.

That should be complete by the first of the year.
