Commissioner of Safety and Homeland Security addresses highway deaths

Hamilton County's Nightside Pachyderms hosted the Tennessee Commissioner of Safety and Homeland Security.

At their meeting in Ooltewah, Commissioner Bill Gibbon addressed two the Tennessee Highway Patrol's top priority is having an impact on the number of deaths on the road.

Recent attention has already brought numbers down in two big categories.

"We're gonna continue to really focus on driving under the influence and enforcing our seat belt laws, because we think those are two ways that we can have a very tangible on the fatality rate,"

Gibbon said for the first time in recent history, fewer than 50 percent of traffic deaths involve people not wearing seatbelts, and fewer than 30 percent involve drunken driver.
