CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Sophia Olenchek's spectacular goal from the corner in the 71st minute proved to be the difference in Notre Dame's 1-0 win over rival Chattanooga Christian in the Region 4-/A/AA championship.
Olenchek's difficult tally came less than 45 seconds after Taylor Green turned away one of Chattanooga Christian's best scoring chances of the night. The Irish keeper punched away a CCS corner kick, then made a diving stop on Hannah Henry's rebound header that bounced off the post.
Green threw it ahead to Olenchek, who forced throw-in on a quick run up the left side. She gathered the ricochet of her toss just yards away from the corner, and bent the match's lone goal into the far side of the net.
Notre Dame now advances to host Grace Academy in Saturday's sub-state sectional round, while CCS will travel to McMinn Central. Winners advance to next week's state tournament in Murfreesboro.
McMinn Central earned the home date by beating Grace 3-2 on penalty kicks in the Region 3-A/AA final Thursday night. The two teams were tied at 1 at the end of regulation, then each scored in OT to go to PK's knotted at 2.
The Chargers out-scored the Golden Eagles 4-3 in the PK round to clinch the victory.
