Volkswagen opens new plant in China

Posted: Updated:

German automaker Volkswagen has opened a new production facility in Ningbo, a city in southeastern China located some 150 kilometers south of Anting near the greater Shanghai area.

With an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles, Volkswagen says in a new release that the facility will create 5,700 new jobs.

Both Volkswagen and Skoda vehicles will be built in the Ningbo plant. Skoda is a VW brand sold in Europe.

The plant will also boast its own press, body and paint shops and final assembly unit.

Production of the first vehicle will be the Skoda Superb, followed by other Volkswagen and Skoda models based on the Modular Transverse Toolkit design.

The Ningbo factory is Shanghai-Volkswagen's fifth vehicle plant.
