Crime Stoppers: Lottery Tickets Stolen in Kangaroo Burglary

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB-DT) - Another week, another convenience store burglary. This time, the East Brainerd Road Kangaroo was closed and no one was in danger.

Video from a surveillance camera aimed at the front entrance shows our criminal, first, try to muscle his way through the locked doors. When that fails, he resorts to blunt force. He picks up something and throws it through the glass. "Once he actually broke out that window," explained Chattanooga Police Sergeant Daniel Jones, "he knocks out the glass and runs in and grabs all the lottery tickets that are in the container sitting on the front counter."

The smash and grab that takes all of 5 seconds puts the bad guy in scratch-off heaven. He had apparently hoped with to amass his Tennessee Riches* with this heist, but soon found out All That Glitters* is not Sapphires & Gold*. Heck, it does not even lead to Mooola* when dealing with stolen lottery tickets. They have to be activated at purchase. (*actual Tennessee Lottery Instant Win games)

Easy enough, just pick up the thief when he tries to cash them in. "Well, the fortunate things is, he has," said Sgt. Jones. "However, he's actually smart enough to get other people to do it for him."

So, we will have to get him the old fashioned way: with your help. He is a white man, about 5'8" to 6' tall. "The video is not that great," added Jones, "however...you can tell that the guy has, at least, got a receding hairline."

Another thing could give him away. "They're gonna know that this guy has a lot of lottery tickets sitting in his house and he can't do anything with them," Jones said.

If you are a person whom this guy has put up to trying to cash-in one of his stolen tickets, remember, your call to Crime Stoppers is completely anonymous. There is honest cash available for your information. "If you got a scratch-off ticket for a hundred bucks and can't get it cashed," said Sgt. Jones, "you call us and I'll make sure you get some cash."

If you know this guy, you have already recognized him. Claim your reward; he will never know it was you who turned him in. Up to a thousand dollars is waiting. Call: 698-3333.

An officer will answer the phone, but he will never ask your identity.
