GPS soccer, Baylor volleyball post playoff wins

GPS soccer blanks PJP 3-0 in opening round
Izzy Phillips scored a pair of goals to lead Girls Preparatory School to 3-0 win over visiting Pope John Paul II in the opening round of the Division II-AA girls' state soccer tournament Saturday afternoon.

Both of Phillips' tallies came in the second half as the Bruisers' improved to 11-3-1 on the year. They'll travel to Harpeth Hall next week for the state quarterfinals.

Taylor Walden opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. GPS out-shot PJP 12-2 in the match.

Baylor volleyball clinches DII tourney spot
Baylor became the fifth and final local team to clinch a spot in next week's TSSAA state volleyball tournament with a 3-1 win over visiting Briarcrest Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Red Raiders (39-7), who hadn't played a match in nearly two weeks, advanced to the DII-AA bracket in Murfreesboro with scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-19 and 25-18.

Rachel Ford and Gabby Gray combined for 35 kills to lead the Baylor attack. Ford finished with 18 kills and 11 digs, while Gray added 17 scores and 3.5 blocks. Haven Bethune dished out 46 assists, while Sarah Sumida led the Lady Red Raiders in digs with 22.
