EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (WRCB-DT) - What a great time it is to be in the East Ridge High School Band! Their numbers are up; gained 20 members over last year. Director Perry Vandergriff took over the middle school at Christmas and has since swelled that program with 40 more members than last year. he looks for 34 students to move up in 2014 and says, even the bus drivers are excited because they will need to add a third bus! And on top of all that, Hamilton County Commissioner Tim Boyd has made considerable donations to the program from his discretionary fund, and Mr. Vandergriff says he, for once, has too many parent volunteers.

If you were lucky enough to catch their halftime show, you saw a performance without an official title. Mr. Vandergriff tells me he likes to think of it as, "Songs the Band Director Likes!" And he sure picked some good ones. If you are into horn bands from the 70's, that Tower of Power sound, you would like it, too. It included: Gimme Some Lovin' by the Blues Brothers, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, written by Joe Zawinul in 1966 and made famous by Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, and closing with Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground.

This time of season, the kids are already working to perfect their East Ridge Christmas Parade performance. This year, they are hoping to march the Christmas parade in Pigeon Forge, too. Congratulations on a wonderful season to the East Ridge Marching Band, your Band of the Week!
