Chattanooga firefighters responded to a call at a home on Elmendorf Street Friday afternoon.

Crews responded to the fire around 1 p.m. on the 2300 block of Elmendorf Street.

Crews on the scene reported light smoke coming from the back of the house. Firefighters located the fire in the basement at the back of the house.

The fire was contained to the basement. The home sustained about $20,000 in damage.

Four people live in the home but were not there when the fire started.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Southeast Tennessee were called in to provide assistance to the family.

Officials say improperly discarded smoking materials likely caused the fire.
