Snow Hill Elementary wins nationwide contest for new playground

Posted: Updated:

Students at Snow Hill Elementary have something to be happy about.

They are the winners of the "Big Al's Recess Redo" contest. The school will get an extreme makeover thanks to a $10,000 gift card courtesy of the Home Depot.

Big Al Mack from Hits 96 FM in Chattanooga made a surprise visit to the school at 9 a.m. Friday to make the announcement.

"I never thought I'd be handing a school principal $10,000 in gift cards, but I can't wait to do it," said Big Al, co-host of the most-listened-to contemporary morning program in America.  "The kids at Snow Hill Elementary are about to get the coolest playground in the land thanks to our friends at The Home Depot."

Snow Hill learned in September they were finalists for the playground in a nationwide contest, and listeners voted for the most deserving school.

The entry essay from Snow Hill Elementary stated: "My school is fantastic, but we are unable to use our playground for many days in a row because of safety hazards and fire ants. On our wooden play set, a bridge broke during play last year. This year we have no mulch on the ground, so pieces of concrete and rocks are exposed. Several children have tripped and hurt themselves because of these large rocks. Please help us, we love outside and love to exercise!! Our pre-k is also in need of a separate play space because the current play sets are too big for the little students."
