EPB warns of imposters targeting customers

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

EPB is assuring customers their information is safe as a widespread scam makes its way to Chattanooga.

Several customers tell EPB they have been contacted on the phone by people claiming to be with EPB.  The caller states that a payment must be made immediately to prevent their power from being disconnected.

The imposter instructs the customer to purchase a MoneyPak (reloadable debit card) at Wal Mart, Walgreens, CVS or Rite Aid, and then call back with the account number from the card.

This is a scam. EPB never calls customers asking for payments to be made with pre-paid debit cards.

Similar incidents have also been reported in Knoxville, Nashville and in Alabama. The Better Business Bureau has issued an alert, which can be viewed at http://www.bbb.org/blog/2013/04/hang-up-on-new-utility-bill-phone-scam/

Please help us alert the community about this scam, and ask people to call us to report any incidents like this at 423-648-1372.
