Parents, students, school officials meet to discuss Brainerd High School

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

It wasn't only parents who showed up Tuesday night.

A few dozen people gathered in the auditorium, some of them, students who say they're tired of Brainerd making negative headlines.

Armed with pictures they say were taken by students, Brainerd High School parents were looking for answers about what they call a snake and rodent infestation.

Tawanda Davis, "I'm just looking out for what's best for my child as well as the other kids of the school."

Uras Agee, principal, "It's not 20, it's not 30. We're talking a small number, 5 or less, throughout the building."

Principal Uras Agee says summer construction on the school building's heating and air system left the building open to the visitors, but he insists there is no infestation.

Uras Agee, principal, "I think all of those components together have caused us to have a few snakes and a few rodents, but it's not an infestation."

Students like Jade Williams attended Tuesday's public meeting to put the issue to rest. "I haven't seen one at all and I've been here for 2 and a half years."

School Superintendent Rick Smith also showed up to ease the minds of parents.

He says the school building is not being considered for replacement at this time, but any further sightings will be addressed.

Rick Smith, Hamilton County School Superintendent, "Any future problems that we have with rodents and or any reptiles we'll take care of, we'll deal with it."

Agee hopes the conversation can now shift to what's going right at Brainerd High School. "Our scores are up, our graduation rate is up, in all academic categories we've had gains."

Jade Williams says enough with the bad press.  She's ready for her community to get on board with things that matter.  She says rodents and snakes don't. "They don't care about the good things we do they just care about the bad things."

Agee says maintenance workers are routinely in the building, especially after the recent reports from parents.
