Farmer may be forced to sell his cattle after barn fire

Posted: Updated:
SALE CREEK, TN (WRCB) -

Farmer Don Fuller can only watch as firefighters try to stop the fire that destroyed part of his livelihood Monday afternoon.

Fuller says he's farmed cattle for years. The barn that caught fire housed hundreds of bales of hay, valued at $12,000, it used to feed his cattle. Now its all gone.

"He's lost a lot of money here," says Amy Maxwell with Hamilton County Emergency Services.

Fuller says he recently laid his father to rest and his wife just had a kidney transplant. His farm kept him busy but now he has nothing to turn to. He has no insurance and now no food to keep his trade.

Right now investigators are stumped as to how the fire happened. "There's no electricity at this shed so the cause of the fire is undetermined," says Maxwell.

A neighbor first saw the fire and called 911. Crews had to pull burning bales of hay out of the barn before they could extinguish it with water. "Its the only way we would be able to control this fire. Hay can burn and burn and burn for a long period of time," Maxwell explains.

She says the total cost of damages is $54,000.
