SUMMERVILLE, GA (WRCB) - The Chattooga County Sheriff's Office in investigating a strange incident that happened Wednesday night.
Investigators say someone called 911 from an address on Katie Lane in Summerville. The caller was whispering into the phone. The 911 dispatcher could not understand and sent deputies, and eventually a SWAT team.
Twenty-year-old Douglas Caron is charged with falsely reporting a crime after putting sheriff's deputies, the SWAT team and neighbors through a scary ordeal Wednesday night while he was supposed to be pet sitting for a family on vacation.
"I was concerned. I have a three year old," neighbor Megan Carpenter said.
Neighbor Megan Carpenter worried for her family's safety as a standoff situation went on just a few houses away.
"We ended up locking all the doors not knowing what was going on,' Carpenter said.
Chattooga County 911 first got a call about prowlers at the Summerville home around 5:30 pm. but deputies couldn't find anyone. A second call came in about an hour later, but dispatchers couldn't make out the caller's whispers.
This time, deputies were able to talk to Douglas Caron, through an open window. They say he was threatening them. Then he jumped from the second floor window. He was arrested, but told investigators there were at least two other armed people inside.
"They kicked in this glass and knocked it in. There was glass all over the floor of the house," Tony Campbell said.
The Walker County SWAT team busted into the home. It turns out, no one else was inside. The homeowners are out of state and Caron was pet sitting for them. Family friend and lock smith Tony Campbell went over Thursday to secure the house.
"We unlocked it and the door knob was messed up and I thought well we better change these locks so I went ahead and changed the locks for her," Campbell said.
He says the whole ordeal has left them all pretty confused.
"Went through the house through here. There wasn't nothing gone. Nothing missing. So, I just figure it must've been a prank or something," Campbell said.
Neighbors just say they're glad the man is behind bars and no one was hurt.
Douglas Caron was charged with false report of a crime Thursday, a misdemeanor.
