School administrators working to keep snakes out of classrooms

Posted: Updated:

Maintenance crews are at Brainerd High School on a regular basis, especially after a recent finding in one of the classrooms.

A snake caught the attention of some students who shared photos with Channel 3.

"We've had a few minor issues. I think because of our construction," Principal Aguras Agee said on Wednesday.

"We've just received a new heating and air unit. There was construction, major construction all summer long."

Agee says the school immediately called the central office after reports of snakes and rodents inside the school.

"They're coming, monitoring maybe two or three days a week just to see how things are going in the classroom," says Agee.

When construction to build Brainerd High School began in 1959, Hawaii wasn't even a state. Since then the school has gone through a couple of upgrades.

"Rome wasn't built in a day. All the issues have taken time to become issues, they're going to take time to correct," Agee says.

A new school building may become reality in the distant future. For now the school's administrators, staff and students will have to work with what they have, even if a couple of surprise guests show up from time to time.

However, Agee wants parents to know the students can learn without watching where they step.

"Every precaution and every measure that we can take, we've been taking to try to rectify the situation," Agee says.

A community meeting will be held on October 15 at 6:00 p.m. at Brainerd High School. Agee encourages any parents and community members to attend if they'd like their voices heard.
