Ringgold softball rallies past Heritage in non-region rivalry

Posted: Updated:

RINGGOLD, Ga. (WRCB) -- A defensive miscue helped Heritage stay alive in the seventh, but it also cost the Generals the game one inning later in a 4-3 extra-innings loss to non-region rival Ringgold Tuesday night.

The late-season playoff tune-up turned into an emotional back-and-forth battle between two teams that were ranked No. 2 in the state in their respective classifications last week.

The Lady Tigers (22-5) led 2-1 heading to the seventh, but Heritage pulled even when a Ringgold error scored Lauren Lawson. The Generals (21-6) moved in front two batters later when Brooklyn Frazier's double scored Katie Prichett for a 3-2 lead.

The advantage was short-lived, though, as Devan Brown singled through the middle in Ringgold's last at-bat to score Ally Ellis to tie the game at 3. Karoline Sholl came charging home from second on the play, as well, but was thrown out at the plate by center-fielder Olivia Tamewitz to force extra innings.

After a power outage in the light banks caused a 20-minute delay, the Tigers returned that favor in the top of the eighth when catcher Aimie Davidson chased it down a wild pitch and threw out Sydney Smith at the plate.

Brown then scored Ringgold's walk-off game-winner from second on a pair of Heritage errors in the bottom half of the inning. The Generals tried to turn a double-play off Davidson's grounder to short, but an errant throw to first invited Brown to keep running around third. The throw home beat her to the plate, but she slid in safely as the ball skidded away from catcher Shelby Hammontree.
