Groups protest ruling in favor of fired officers

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Citizens groups are protesting a ruling that allows two Chattanooga Police officers fired for using excessive force to return to work.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports (http://bit.ly/16LTlJN) Concerned Citizens for Justice members are collecting signatures for a petition asking the city to appeal last week's ruling.

The Judge ruled that Sean Emmer and Adam Cooley acted as they were trained to do when they subdued an inmate who was at a halfway house in 2012, leaving him with eight leg fractures.

The local chapter of the NAACP issued a statement saying that the opinion sets a dangerous precedent.

Concerned Citizens for Justice member Ash-Lee Henderson said she is encouraging people who support an appeal to attend this week's city council meeting.

The city has until Oct. 9 to appeal.
