North Georgia sees unemployment drop

Posted: Updated:

Areas of North Georgia saw a decline in unemployment from July to August.

The Georgia Department of Labor announced North Georgia's unemployment rate dropped 1.1 percent to 8.3 percent.

The rate is also 1.1 percent lower than the same time frame last year.

Officials say the drop was a result of significant reduction in layoffs and total unemployment claims were down almost 25 percent for the year.

Metro Athens had the lowest area jobless rate at 6.1 percent, while the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 11.9 percent.  Dalton also saw significant decrease with a two percent drop to 10.3 percent.

Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for August was 8.7 percent, down from 8.8 percent in July. The rate was 9.0 percent in August a year ago.

Local area unemployment data is not seasonally adjusted. Georgia labor market data is available here.
