Sunscreen for babies, kids recalled for potential contamination

(NBC) - A New Hampshire company that makes natural and organic body care products is recalling 30,000 tubes of sunscreen for babies and children because the products may be contaminated with three types of disease-causing bacteria and fungi.

W.S. Badger Co. Inc. of Gilsum, N.H., is recalling all lots of its 4-ounce SPF 30 Baby Sunscreen Lotion and one lot of its 4-ounce SPF 30 Kids Sunscreen lotion because they may be contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida parapsilosis and Acremonium fungi.

The lots passed required testing before sale, but routine re-testing revealed that the preservatives in several lots "had been compromised," Badger founder and chief executive Bill Whyte said in a statement.

"In our 18-year history, this voluntary recall is a first. We continue to conduct rigorous testing and are taking steps to ensure this doesn't happen in the future," he said.

The microbial contaminants can cause illness in animals and humans. No adverse reactions have been reported in the connection with the products, the firm said.

The affected lots include:

  • SPF 30 Baby Sunscreen Lotion with UPC codes 634084490091 and 634084490114, lot numbers 3024A, 3057B, 3063A, 3063B, 3132A, 3133A.
  • SPF 30 Kids Sunscreen Lotion with UPC codes 634084490145 and 634084490169, lot numbers 3164A.

For more information, see the recall notice issued by the Food and Drug Administration.

Company officials said they manufacture the top-selling sunscreen in U.S. natural markets.

Consumers who have purchased the Sunscreen Lotion should not use these products and may return product to the original point of purchase for a full refund, or contact Badger directly at 1-800-603-6100 or email recalls@badgerbalm.com between the hours of 8:30-4:30 ET, Monday through Friday.
